THE SSNIT Ladies Club has donated GHc20, 000.00 to the ‘Save a Child, Save a Mother’ initiative by the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, at her Ridge office in Accra.

The donation is meant to assist in the building of an ultra-modern maternity block at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi to address the problem of inadequate facilities leading to avoidable deaths of

mothers and children who visit there for medical care. Mrs. Faustina Nti, the President of the Club, who

presented the cheque to the First Lady on behalf of her team, said they were motivated to support the initiative since it could help greatly save the lives of the children and their mothers.

Responding, Mrs. Akuffo-Addo thanked the SSNIT Ladies Club for the donation and said the funds would be used judiciously to execute the project.

She also spoke of initiatives to support the Cancer Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and called on other public-spirited individuals and Institutions to emulate the kind gesture of the SSNIT Ladies Club and support such projects.

Joy News Kwame Boateng, whose documentary, Next To Die”, sparked the current efforts at building the facility, quoted a nurse of the Unit saying, “In a day, the Unit can lose six to seven babies. And on a bad day, it can lose ten.”

Fund-raising events have been held recently in both Accra and Kumasi to provide funding to start the maternity block estimated to cost about GHc 10 million.
