The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), in collaboration with the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), have organized an information-sharing forum at the University of Development Studies UDS, Navrongo Campus to enlighten students on the importance of social security.

The forum, dubbed “SSNIT Info Shop”, held on April 6, 2019 was meant to help the university students prepare, secure and take control of their lives before and beyond age 60 or in the event of permanent invalidity.

It was on the theme “SSNIT! Your security for tomorrow”, and was attended by over 1000 students, the Principal, UDS Navrongo campus, Professor Albert Luguterah, USAG President, Mr. Kingsley Sarpong and the UDS SRC President, Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Abotsi and Executives.

Addressing the students, the Director General, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang said the primary objective of the SSNIT scheme is to ensure retirement income security for workers and guarantee that every worker receives retirement and related benefits as and when due.

Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang encouraged students to secure their future by registering and contributing to the Scheme when they start working.

“Whether it’s your own small startup or you are working for someone, I strongly urge you to register today with our officers who are here and start your contributions, because the scheme is set up to receive contributions from members from age 15”,  Dr. Tenkorang remarked.

Dr. Tenkorang told the students that instead of seeing old age as a distant reality, they should take social security seriously because everyone is exposed to the contingencies of old age, invalidity and death.

He said SSNIT has made significant contributions to the development of tertiary education in Ghana because the Trust recognizes students not only as future leaders but also as potential work force key to the sustainability of the Pension Scheme.

The head of External Communications of the Office Corporate Affairs, Mr. Charles Garshong gave an overview of Social Security under Act 766 and its related benefits.

He also touched on the Investments by the Trust and its impact on the country.

The General Manager Benefits, Mr. Robert Owusu-Sekyere highlighted how benefits are processed and the challenges that usually come with it. He also explained the various methods of calculating the different benefits.

The students were very excited about the programme and said that they look forward to more of such programmes in future. Some students also pledged to serve as SSNIT Ambassadors on Campus.

Professor Luguterah lauded the Trust for partnering with USAG to engage students in Social Security. He appealed to the students to take their future seriously by registering with the Trust and start contributing early to enjoy decent benefit from SSNIT when they retire.

There was a radio discussion programme on the operations of SSNIT and the program, drama by students and a quiz with awards.

Also present were executives of SSNIT including the Area Manager Tamale, Mr. Jos Bougre, Branch Managers from Bolga, Gambaga and Bawku and a registration Team.
